World Trade Center Boston
Located in Boston's historic Seaport District, the World Trade Center is the premier exhibition, conference and event facility in New England featuring a 120,000 square foot exhibition hall, 418 fixed seat amphitheater, and 35,000 square feet of conference and meeting space.
Located near Boston's historic waterfront, this site is adjacent to the World Trade Center Conference Center . The area is only a few blocks away from Boston's major highways, including Interstate 90 and 93, making this location convenient to both downtown Boston as well as all surrounding areas.
The World Trade Center project accomplished the renovation and conversion of a 70-year-old former Commonwealth Pier landmark structure into an 800,000-square-foot facility that now houses exhibition space and offices for high-tech and international trade companies. Special attention was paid to the preservation of the headhouse, an historic concrete, steel, and stone structure. The renovation incorporated the structural needs of a large financial institution (Fidelity) and a TV production studio. The design accommodated floor loading requirements for an extensive computer system, including multiple emergency generators and corresponding fuel storage space. It also included structural protection of computer floors against water damage and structural reinforcement to support dense filing systems, folding partitions and fireproof safes.
The timber-pile-supported Commonwealth Pier structure had experienced settlement of up to two feet and lateral movement of up to one foot. In addition, portions of the quay wall had become unstable. The solution was to remove the existing fill to depths of as much as ten feet along the quay wall and up to five feet at the center, and to replace it with an equal volume of low-density cellular concrete. Weidlinger Associates recommended the lightweight concrete after studying the settlement behavior and stability of the pier foundations.
The designers of the Boston World Trade Center appropriately eschewed pared-down modernism for a more multi-cultural approach. Decorative elements were employed but made modern. Fin-like brackets, clad in GKD's Futura 3110, appear to support deep Polynesian overhangs
